I notice the funniest things since I started renovating a house. In our bathroom at the Soho Grand Hotel I was fascinated by the subway tile design. If you look closely the second tile from the top is not a standard rectangle. It’s square, interesting. I couldn’t find a reason why they did this other then to break up the line.

The hotel bathroom was simple but classic. A pretty pedestal sink with a gooseneck faucet and a stone hex floor. The floor tiles were cream, taupey brown/gray, and gray grout. Kinda funky and different. Look closely at the floor photo below. It may look out of focus on the edges but actually the floor really looked like this. It would change color as you looked at it in the distance. The sketch wallpaper keeps the space from feeling too traditional and adds a modern twist.

A fun tile source sent in by Jeanne, thanks! American Restoration Tile is a custom ceramic tile manufacture. The shops mounts all patterns and borders into repeating sheets ready for installation. Above a shot of gray and white ceramic tiles in a kitchen. Below just few examples of their tile patterns. The brighter colors are a bit overwhelming. I would try making a pattern in shades of gray. Cork Penny Rounds

One of first projects on the new house is re-doing one of three bathrooms. I’ve been pulling together a little bathroom inspiration to maybe get an idea of what kind of tile we might want to use. We definitely want something classic in white or carrera marble. The house is 250 years old so we don’t want to get to modern. I love hexs, penny rounds, basketweave, and subway tiles. But which one to choose? The bathroom is on the first floor and maybe a potential rental apartment. So I don’t want to go to fancy. Check out some of my ideas above and below.

The closing is thankfully going smoothly. Looks like we will have the house by July 11. I am so excited. I can’t wait to get started on all my fun projects.

I headed over to Waterworks showroom in Greenwich today to help me get a little bathroom inspiration. Waterworks is great store to check out if your going for a traditional looking bathroom. I totally fell for these open washstands and the 2″ hexagon shape tiles. The hexagon shape is so classic but the larger shape tile in an unexpected twist. I think I might pair it with a subway tile on the walls or covering the inside of bathroom stall. I can’t remember the name of the tile shown in the hex shape but I told is was pretty pricey. They suggested using carrera marble which is a cooler looking stone and a more reasonable price point. Check out more: waterworks.com.

One of my favorite tiles is white penny round mosaic tiles. The look is classic and a great choice for any bathroom renovation. Eco-friendly cork alternatives come from a company called Habitus. I popped in into Mosaic House which is pretty much next door to the Baking Supply store. This place is a big kid’s candy shop. All the tiles are amazing and gorgeous! I can’t wait to have a house to cover an entryway or bathroom with any of these. I took a couple shots in the shop. I was really drawn to a tile called, “fleurs”-looks like fish scales (below).
