Spring Comes To New England

spring bulbs coming up Spring Comes To New England

I can’t believe my daffodils are coming up. Spring is around the corner—it’s just 15 days away according to our vernal equinox. I can’t wait for my town to explode into color. The magnolia trees that blossom in late April are my favorite. Wait? So we really have another 2 months of cold? That doesn’t seem right or fair. Happy Weekend!

Happy New Year 2010!

bowl of clams for new years dinner

I went down to the beach at sunset thinking I would be the only soul braving the 20 degrees temps. The parking lot was full. As I got out onto the beach I noticed small groups of clammers dotting the surf. Equipped with shovels, buckets, and full winter gear these clammers didn’t even seem phased. One family was digging surf clams for a New Year’s eve clam chowder. How freakin’ adorable and cool is that?

I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone who has ever commented, e-mailed, and or read my blog. Your support means the world to me and frankly is the only reason I keep going. To all my blogging friends who to continue to inspire me everyday. I’m so glad that somebody created this crazy blog world so we could all become friends. Here’s to health, happiness, and success in the New Year!

Lobster Pots at Lobster Company

I hope everyone has a great holiday. I am unplugging tonight and heading up to Maine for Christmas. I can’t wait to eat homemade cinnamon buns, my mom’s speciality on Christmas morning, and spend sometime with family. Maybe my grammy will teach me how to make her famous stuffed mushrooms? (Gram, I’ll be up tomorrow morning!) Best wishes and safe travels. xoxo, katy

Above and below just a couple photos I took down the street this afternoon. I tried taking a short video of the ocean. It’s unedited. I remember missing the sound of the ocean when I was land locked. Maybe you do too? The video is taken at my favorite local beach. Super small and perfect for sun bathing, swimming, and kayaking in the summer months.

p.s. check out this video and article of a local marblehead resident singing christmas carols at the post office. So cute!

Snowy Weekend Breakfast

We got a big snowstorm on Saturday night. I think we got about a foot? We slept in late, made pancakes, shoveled, and took a great afternoon walk around Marblehead. I really love the snow and how beautiful old town looks with a dusting. Above and below a few snapshots from today. I spotted a friend wearing a hand knit pair of trigger gloves. His grandmother made them for grandfather back in the day. So cute, right?

Garland On Fence In Marblehead

Over the weekend we got our first snowstorm. It wasn’t much but enough that I had put on my winter boots and do some morning shoveling. I love winter when it’s snowing. The cold, gray, bleak days in March and April kill me.

Above and below a few houses decorated for the holidays in Marblehead’s Old Town neighborhood. I like simple wreathes and garlands around the door. At the very bottom a lobster trap Christmas tree. The tree was part of Marblehead’s annual Christmas Walk celebration held over the weekend. Enjoy!

Red and White Wallpaper in Old House

I’m so happy to share my friend Heidi’s lovely living room wallpaper. Heidi lives just down the street from me in an old house too. Her house is adorable filled with old house nooks and beautiful wallpaper. The wallpaper in her living room is my favorite. A great pattern with a little pop of color.

This afternoon, I came across the source of Heidi’s adorable wallpaper (thanks jennifer condon!) My first thought, I can have her wallpaper too? You can see the print as well as few other very historic new england designs at waterhousewallhangings.com.

Above a photo of her living room perfectly decorated to fit the small space. How gorgeous are her floors? Below the wallpaper in a reverse colorway. Check out waterhousewallhangings.com for purchasing information.

Do you have an old home you would like to share? Send me an e-mail at elliott.katy@gmail.com.

Old New England Cemetery: Burial Hill

Posted on | October 29, 2009 | 11 Comments

Old Burial Hill

Old Burial Hill in Marblehead, MA

In honor of Halloween I took some photos of Old Burial Hill in Marblehead. The cemetery established in 1638 is one of the oldest graveyards in New England. Headstones are perched high above the colonial village with views of the nearby ocean. Six hundred revolutionary war heroes as well as notable Marblehead families are buried here. The headstones vary many displaying skulls and angels with wings. The winged skull was popularized by the puritans and is one of the oldest styles of gravestone markings. The scrolling lines and imagery are beautiful examples of art from the 17th and 18th century. Below just a few of my favorites.

p.s. in the october issue of Martha Stewart Living there is an article about New England graveyards. Check it on the writer’s site.
