Make-Your-Own Model Sailboats

Recommended by Mud Puddle Toys and every kid in Marblehead the T12 cruiser from Tippecanoe is the easiest and best make-your-own sailboat on the market. Sold as a kit ($46) or finished ($79) this little cruiser has a western red cedar hull, and nylon spinnaker cloth sails that will last for years.

Every 4th of July during Marblehead’s Festival of Arts; kids in town have the chance to construct their own. In the afternoon the finished boats are brought to Redd’s pond for a race. We happened upon the race our first year in town and I freaked out over the cuteness! I would love to build a few boats with my nieces and have our own family race over Thanksgiving weekend.

Tippecanoe based in Everson, Washington also offers high-end kits for adults which range in price from $200-$600. The top of the line T50 MOD RC Racing Yacht was designed to be raced in the Marblehead class. The T50 includes a radio control kit as well as a mainsail, plus three different jibsails.

I found this great video of the T37 out for a sail with a camera attached to the transom. It’s really cool because from this point of view you begin to second guess if you’re inside a model boat.
