Book: Markets of New England

We have so many great events coming up in New England it’s hard to keep them all straight. I picked the new book, Markets of New England by Christine Chitnis to help me navigate the best farm and local art events. In the introduction Chitnis emphasizes her, “passion for supporting local artisans” and how “buying products at locally owned businesses and local farmers and artists keep that money circulating close to home”.
She notes “according to the 3/50 project, for every $100 spent locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that at a national chain, only $43 stays local”.
With an emphasis on local the book is broken up by state including recommendations for Farmers’ Markets and Craft Markets. Beautiful photographs taken by Chitnis depict idyllic landscapes and produce grown in New England. Hours, locations, and times of year are listed to help you plan ahead. I imagine I’ll be stashing this great little travel book in my glove box for impromptu road trips. I have my eye on Rockland Farmers’ Market for when I’m up in Maine this August and Farm Fresh Rhode Island Local Food Fest which is held on the grounds of Castle Hill Inn in Newport. Can we all say a collective, YUM!
But it’s not all about food in this book. Craft Markets from all New England are featured as well. This Saturday Chitnis will be at Squam Art Fair in Holderness, New Hampshire. A craft event were “you’ll find everything from yarn, clothes, and vintage linens to art prints, books and photographs”. You can pick up Markets of New England at many local bookstores as well as online for $15.95.
