Found! Secret Door

DSC 3941 Found! Secret Door

Yesterday Greg found a secret door behind a wall that we never knew about. He tried to convince me it led to another dimension.

Turns out the old barn door leads to the narrow space between our house and the neighbors. At first, Greg wanted to keep the doorway. It would have to approved by the Historic Society because currently you can’t see it from the outside. I would rather replace it with a window. We have a window above the door on the second floor (the windows would then stack on top of each other and line-up). The wall is next to a someday kitchen and I would love to get some more light into the room. A fun find! If you look at the photo below the door is behind the ladder on the first floor.

How fun! Oh I love that, and every time you look out that window, you will think of it as a door,I bet.

We had the same thing happen in our old house in England. I too wanted to put a window in but my father in law really pushed keeping the door and he was so right. The door was just off the kitchen and we kept the recycling etc out there out of the rest of the (small) garden. It was brilliant.

This sounds like the beginning of a Nancy Drew novel! How unique!

    Hi Kim,

I thought the door might be good for trash and recycling too but it’s really hard to get anything out of the space. I’m also in fear that the smell of garbage outside might waft into my kitchen.

But deciding on a window or door is far off. We are still knee deep in roof estimates. For now it’s just a happy discovery.

How fun is that! At least you have documented it, for future owners. I’d go ahead and make it a window, too. We had a weird door in our house that lead to the back of a closet in the next room. I kept it for awhile because it was so cool, but eventually walled it off. No need to open a door and walk into the back of a coat closet, is there?!

I love all the little fun things about old houses. It’s so great that you have photos to record this with. I lived in an old house that the previous owners gave me photos they had from the early 1900′s. They were the BEST thing ever! At one point there had been a sleeping porch and the kitchen was outdoors. It’s wonderful to see how things change over the years.

    I love your house!:)

Wow – that is very cool. Certainly not something you would find in the suburbs!

Lucky you! I always dreamed of finding a secret door in my house as a kid. Little chance of that in a 1970s ranch house, though….

I would love a door right there – you can walk into the back of the house from the front. How cool is that? More snow to shovel though!
