Harraseeket Lobster Roll

It was an unusually warm weekend in Maine—I think it hit 85 degrees? My mom and I decided to enjoy the last glimpses of summer with sunset lobster rolls at Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster in South Freeport, Maine. Freeport sound familiar to you? It’s the headquarters of L.L. Bean (scored these boots) and outlet heaven. South Freeport is just 3 miles south.
It was a perfect night. The restaurant has outdoor picnic benches that look out over the harbor. The sun set on the water highlighting the changing leaves in the distance. My lobster roll was amazing with big chunks in a top-split roll with fries and cole slaw. I have to say though the best sides I had this summer were at Owls Head General Store—damn good red bliss potato salad. That point doesn’t really matter Harraseeket is a pretty amazing spot but I thought I would include because I keep dreaming about it. Harraseeket has awesome homemade pie, go for the chocolate cream. Above and below photos from the night.

Over the weekend I was up in Unity, Maine for the Common Ground Fair. Held every year at the end of September the country fair celebrates rural and agricultural traditions of Maine.
My favorite part was the fleece sale. Hundred of bags packed to the brim with raw wool line long tables. The fleeces are “organized initially by color and then grade, with each grower’s fleeces grouped together within the respective category”. I saw a number of spinners carefully inspecting each of the bags. You could tell by the look on their faces this was their version of Disney World. A large piece of fleece below being inspected by judges and a farmer showing me how to properly look at the fleece on a sheep—you never want to poke it because the fibers will get matted and tangled. The area shown is the highest quality merino wool. Gorgeous, right?

I found this image on All The Mountain’s blog this week and I can’t stop looking at it. It reminds me that I need to get back to painting. Having a studio in our house hasn’t worked out. My “space” becomes a place to drop sails and 2 x 4s. No matter how hard I try working from home and having a studio it’s not working out. I’m searching for an inexpensive space in town I can go to for some solace.
The painting above by Grace Hartigan was shot by Gordon Parks for Life magazine. I really really love it! It’s big, colorful, and abstract. My kind of painting. Have a great weekend!
