Architectual Shingles it is!
Posted on | August 18, 2010 | 8 Comments
Last night the Historic Society approved architectural shingles for our house. Yeah! Check that off the list. We’re still waiting to hear back on few estimates. Above a photo of the old 3-tab roof. I can’t wait for it to get done. I know it’s going to look awesome! Oh and the icky shingles that are on the side of the windows are going to be replaced with clapboards. Thank you to everyone for sending so many nice informative e-mails and comments the last few days in regards to shingles. Hearing other homeowners experiences is so helpful! Your not only helping me but the thousands of others that read this blog. Stay tuned….

Katy I look forward to reading your blog from Australia and thinking about the different needs you face with Northern weather etc. The roof is going to look great and then you’ll have the excitement of painting the exterior. Our old timber home ended up a deep bluestone grey/mauve with ironstone baseboards and milk-white trim, and I love it!

I so enjoy reading your blog. I’m only too familiar with the ordeal of renovating an old house. Although I mainly write about food, I posted this (http://www.rosiedequattro.com/2010/06/under-siege-how-i-survived-total-roof.html) a while back about a roof job that had me nearly certifiable! I thought your readers might identify with it and find it entertaining. Good luck with your projects!

I’d be cautious about having a roofer do the clapboards on your dormers if that’s your plan. We did that at my previous condo and, yes, they replaced the asphalt shingles with clapboards but there wasn’t a single one that was parallel to the next. The same holds true for painters; never have them replace clapboards, etc. My recommendation would be to hire a carpenter to do carpentry work. In terms of finding good contractors, talk to people in your neighborhood (leave notes in their doors with your e-mail address) that have had work done since you moved in. You’ve probably seen several houses renovated in the time you’ve been there. You can’t beat having the name of a former client when you make the phone calls.

very pretty color choices. looks a lot like the colors we loved. we’re in the middle of painting our entire 3 story home ourselves. two sides down, two to go. we did a grey/green on our place – hampshire grey from benjamin moore and it’s definitely in the range you’re looking at. you might want to check it out. it’s a super period appropriate color and looks gorgeous with all kinds of flowering plants. we chose muskoka trail for the trim which is actually a neutral cream and much prettier than it looks online and a chartreuse green glossy on the front door. good luck!

Love what you are doing with the house. We just moved to Marblehead and are having our own set of challenges but with the kitchen/bath end of things. Best of luck moving forward.
