abc Rug Sale

On friday I met up with fellow blogger Stephanie of even*cleveland. Remember her awesome salt dough ornaments she shared back in December? We met up at Abc to check out a tufted sofa I had spotted on CreateGirl’s blog–more about that in a second post. First, let’s get to my major rug score.

Abc was having a big sale. I’ve been on the search for rugs for months. I’m pretty particular about my colors. I would really like to find a few with pinks, greens, and navy for my second floor to go with my sage green walls. The colors I like are really uncommon because they don’t occur naturally so I need to find really faded antique versions–more common are brighter reds.

Stephanie and I casually flipped through a huge pile of 5 X 7′s when we came across a beauty. It was marked originally for $2,400 marked down to $499. Majority of the rugs in the pile were marked down to $1,499 so we thought the rug was mismarked? I was a big hesitant wondering why it such a good deal? The dealer was a little pushy telling me it was an amazing deal and putting on a big show that someone was going to get in trouble for the mistake.

We pulled it out, walked on it with our bare feet, and checked out every inch for damage. I think I ask Stephanie a hundred times, “Do you like it?” I wasn’t really sure it was an antique. The color looked like vegetable dyes but the pile was longer then rugs I had seen from Iran. In the end it didn’t really matter, the price was right and I loved it.

Photos from inside ABC above and below photos of the rug at my sister’s house. In the background you can see a red antique rug that has more typical patterning and color. So what do you think? Did I get the deal of the century or was I totally played?

“Abc was having a big sale.” – when are they _not_ having a big sale? Travel blogs about rug dealers soliciting tourists in the middle east are very common. Getting prices down to 20 or 30% the asking price just takes time. It’s no secret:

What matters is that you like it–and it seems like you do. And the price was good for a rug that size, even if it isn’t antique. So I don’t think you should worry about being played. It’s a beautiful rug!

Gorgeous. This is going to look fantastic. I can totally picture your decorating scheme.

If it’s handwoven and 100 percent wool, then it seems like the price is right to me. Maybe not a crazy discount for 5×7, but definitely a fair price for a beautiful rug.

That’s beautiful! I tend to assume I’m always being played, but if you like it and it was within your budget, then who cares.

Make sure to check out the next Landry and Arcari (sp?) tent sale. They are in Salem MA but tent sales are usually in Beverly. Glorious rugs… And we’ve totally lucked out. Also… Check out the Stock Exchange in Manchester (MA). I’ve gotten great treasures there… Including rugs.

I love that rug – it’s truly beautiful and will go with your home. Only buy what you absolutely love at the highest quality you can afford (and you got a deal for a wool rug at that size, regardless of age). I’m betting that rug will still be in your life when it’s old enough to really BE an antique. Great investment.

Good luck on the chimney! You are brave!

Last time I went to ABC in Manhattan to look at rugs I found a beautiful rug with the unusual field color of dark brown. It was approx 8′x10′, marked as late-19th Century, and priced every bit as old: $14K. If I had known ABC negotiated on price, I might have made an offer! Katy, great selection and we’ll take good care of your new treasure. BTW, I want that tufted sofa.

    Thanks Don!

I need two big 8×10′s for my living room and den but I think I’ll have to search for them at auction.
I know I’ll never find anything as plush as this one in a reasonable price range. But that’s ok. I love old rugs that worn and faded too!

We have exotic, luxurious oriental rugs for sale. Our variety is endless; we have oriental rugs of all different, colors, styles, designs, etc. They are made by many different materials such as wool, polypropylene, nylon, cotton, etc; and are machine made or hand made (depending on which you prefer). We ship manufacturer direct, have great connections, and that is why we are the best, and our oriental rugs for sale are cheaper than the rest.
