I’d love to hear about anyone’s experiences buying furniture from Ballard Designs. I really like some of their upholstered pieces (plus they are so affordable!) but I wonder about the quality.

Oly Studio also makes beautiful chairs but I think they probably fall into the expensive category.

I think your idea of upholstering your own fleamarket finds with linen is great. Probably what I would end up doing.

A difficult decision. Usually in upholstered furniture, the cheap stuff does not look as good or last as long as the very expensive stuff. But the very expensive stuff isn’t affordable. Thing is, though, with furniture, I find that the stuff you buy in your 20s you end up having for years and years. So I’ve stopped buying junk. I’ve never bought expensive upholstery, just stuck with hand me downs and vintage. But I have bought cheap bookcases and I regret it. If I had bought solid wood years ago I would still have them. I have made a pledge never to buy particle board anything ever again. (And now I have NO bookcases and books have been in boxes for years — so I guess that’s not working either!)

Katy, You might consider checking out Random Harvest if you’re ever in DC (http://www.randomharvesthome.com/). I heart random harvest and take trips specifically to shop there! They have both antique and reproduction furniture at great prices. In many cases, the antique furniture has been temporarily upholstered in muslin and you can choose your fabric.

I love how the linen upholstery on those really brings out their structural, almost architectural beauty. Shame they are so expensive! I love them – just the kind of thing I like too.
