I am reminded a little bit of David Hockney's fairly recent landsape watercolours. I saw a wonderful documentary on these, where he would be driving around the countryside with his assistant (who basically stood and held his easel so it wouldn't blow over in the wind!), and they would just stop somewhere random if it inspired him.
