Layered Linen and Leather

How do you combine both masculine and feminine styles? For many of us our boyfriends, husbands, or roommates don’t want to live in a world of flowers and pink.

When at my sister’s house last week I snapped a few photos to show how she successfully created a home that combines both her and her husband’s style. Her husband has always had a very vocal design opinion. He began collecting vintage posters and antique rugs obsessively in his early 20′s. They bought their home about 6 six years ago just north of New York City. The house has evolved to become a layered mix of masculine and feminine styles that’s classic and family friendly.

In their living room a handsome leather sofa from Restoration Hardware is deep enough for evening cuddling in front of the fire with the kids. Her husband’s antique rugs layered on the floor warms the space and adds patterning and texture. Vintage French posters and a large abstract painting (by me!) pop off neutral walls. Linen accented curtains, chairs, and a tufted bench infuse softer feminine detailing. Further details such as vintage ceramics, an eagle convex mirror, and brass pharmacy lights gives the room a timeless worn-in feel.

As soon as I saw the pictures, I was going to ask where the abstract painting was from. Then I saw that you made it. WOW. I really, really like it. If you start selling your artwork, I’d be first in line…

Thanks guys. Hopefully, in the next few months I’ll have my office/studio ready.

I went to school for painting. I kinda fell into to this editor job/career. I miss painting and totally jealous of all my classmates who have continued to paint and show in fancy galleries now.

This is a vexing dilemma for me as well, being one female in a household of four males. I think your sister’s place is a beautiful example of how to make everyone happy. I’m in love with the layered look of the antique rugs. Really beautiful. And speaking of beautiful, those floors are out of sight!

One word: gorgeous. I think you should consult your sister on your choice of paint colour! She’s your “go to gal” Judging by the photos that you have put online, while not identical, you definately have similar tastes.

I love your sister’s home. I too like to combine leather and linen together and did so in our second home. Everyone is happy then! Her stairway and entry are great with the painted floor.

The chairs were found a garage sale and bench at a local shop. The reupholstered both of the pieces in linen.

Lovely, gracious home! My sister works with a vintage poster gallery in Westport and NYC. I’m sure your brother-in-law is familiar with them, he has some awesome posters.

Very very nice. I LOVE the painting and I especially love it with the bench and the rug. When you showed this close-up a week or so ago (?) I totally thought it was some crazy expensive vignette from a high-end decorating magazine. My goodness.

So, when’s your gallery show? Special prices for early blog followers?

It can be such a struggle to combine tastes – especially when he likes modern and I like vintage/classic. You sister has done it well! Especially dig the painted checked floor.

The odd thing at our house is that I usually buy the masculine pieces, and my other half loves the more floral items. We can never agree on a rug. Consequently we have naked floors. On the other hand, I usually get to do whatever I want, because it is never too girly.

I’m not sure what kind of paint was used. The floors were painted when me sister moved in. I know you can get floor paints and put a poly coat over the top. I would ask someone at your local paint store for tips. Good luck!
