Vegetable Box: Week 5
Posted on | July 9, 2009 | 17 Comments

If anyone was counting I missed taking a photo of week 4. So here’s week 5. I’m a bit obsessed with these carrots. So earthy and crunchy. We got a bunch last week we devoured with a simple crudité. We had snap peas last week that made it extra special. I saw a recipe for using the carrot greens in a soup? Sounds interesting. I guess you should remove the greens once you get them home because the greens pull the moisture out of the root of the carrot. I also got two Zucchini which may become Zucchini bread. A few tomatoes that were grown in a greenhouse. I could eat them right this second with some fresh mozz and basil. A bunch of lettuce and some Kale. In the colder months I always use Kale in a bean soup but I wonder what else could I make with it?

Thanks so much for sharing your veggie boxes! I'm planning on joining a farm coop as soon as hubby and I gobble down all the veggies in our fridge right now. It's so fun to see what other people get and I am super excited about joining and supporting a local farm!

in my home land of Afghanistan – the Taliban will punish anyone displaying such provocative vegetables. You are lucky you live in USA. I like to visit USA someday.

My dog wishes she was at your house. Carrots are her favorite thing.

I, too, do the FDC and was so excited by the carrot top soup recipe, I made it last night. The first spoonful was a little strange, but then it really grew on me and was delicious.

Have you gotten any kirby cukes yet? We just picked some up in Upstate NY – they're sooo good. We just slice them lengthwise, a little salt and pepper, and dip them raw into dressing. They have a nice earthy taste – weird how that's a good thing.
We say the same thing about the beet greens we grow on our balcony. They taste earthy and mineral-like, but in a good way, not a "mouth full of dirt" way.

Drat, wish I'd seen the carrot top soup recipe before throwing mine away–I just bemoaned my lack of compost facilities.
I need to post a pasta recipe I made with kale last week… I also make kale chips in a 400 degree oven, or just cook pieces with lots of garlic and oil until they are chewy and crispy.

Kristen & Kate– No Kirby Cukes yet. I can't wait.
I would to hear more about Kate's pasta and Kale chip recipe. Post a link once you put it up on your blog.
The lettuce was going to become a Thai Beef Salad tonight. We decided we weren't really hungry and saving it for tomorrow night. I'll report back.

I almost signed up for locally grown vegetables boxes this Fall, but worried that we wouldn't be able to keep up. Now I keep seeing and hearing about everyone's wonderful boxes. We had dinner earlier this evening with friends, and they made a wonderful noodle dish with stir-fried veggies from their box and spicy peanut sauce. Soooo good. I think I'm going to have to rethink this….

Love these photos of your veggies you're posting! Keep them coming! Every time I see your photos of your veggies I want to paint them (I'm a watercolor artist) – I painted my own bag of veggies from the grocery this week. You do a great job of displaying them and making them look so beautiful.

Kale chips are amazing. We discovered them last year when we were overflowing with kale from our CSA.

You can also saute kale like spinach. We use garlic, lemon and white wine. It's super tasty!

Katy, not only are the veggies pretty, but that table cloth you display them on is fabulous! Do you have a story behind it? Thanks for such a lovely blog!

Thanks Stephanie for the nice comment. The tablecloth came from my mom's house. It's a 1950's cotton style tablecloth. I think it was picked up at a garage sale? Super colorful and festive.
