Cobble Floors

I spotted this adorable little cottage over at {frolic!} last week. The house is totally sweet! The cobble floors caught me eye. I’ve been thinking about an alternative floor treatment in my someday mudroom/laundry room. The wood floors are icky and not original. At first, I thought slate (see here). Slate got the nix from the boyfriend. He thought the maintenance would be a bitch. What about cobbles? Feels New England and rustic. We would definitely have to reinforce the floor because of the weight. I think it’s kinda a cool idea?

yes, lovely! though i must say my parents have slate in their back entrance way, and the maintenance has been more or less non-existent!

Just found your blog.. Love love love cobbles!.. You'll hardly ever be doing laundry in heels anyway! I just started my new blog about buying a house.. i'll be putting you in my reading list and enjoying your tips.. Love the DIY glass bottle lamp too!

Would be utterly adorable- I think you might end up with more maintenance though. That's a lumpy-bumpy surface you'd have to keep clean.

I agree with the last commenter–it seems like it would be hard to keep clean. In a mudroom, great, but in a combo mudroom/laundry room, I'm afraid you'd be sweeping constantly and still anything that you dropped on the floor would get a bit gritty. I love this look, though, and it would be *killer* in a straight-up mudroom.

i really love the cobble look but have to agree with others that it would be a total pain to clean—but not impossible. On the other hand it would be very hardy and would certainly maintain it's look over time.

Slate can work. The house I grew up in had dark slate along the entire entry way and it looked nice once pops sealed it all. We are an inside outside kinda family and taking off the shoes everytime to come inside is to much of a hassle so the slate would be covered in white dust from the gravel driveway sticking to our bare or shod feet. It's paved now, a little to late if you ask me. The cobbles are insane. You know how much that floor would weight? TONS! – even if you used "thin" cobbles.

If we were on a slab, that would be cool but we're not. The house in that photo is probably on a slab. In fact, yes, it looks like it is Adobe, it's gotta be a slab.

I put slate in my bathroom and it's just perfect. beautiful and not so hard to maintain (wax). the only problem would be oil and nail polish stains, but this is true for any natural stone. the cobble pose is also quite expensive…

We did slate on our house on Washington Streetand the kitchen turned out beautifully. I did the whole thing myself and even though I had to account for 1/2" shift for the length of the floor (Since the house isn't square), it was great. *And* pretty much no-maintenance.
