This Weekend: Working on Garden Plan

This weekend I’ll be working in my garden. My mom offered to come over on Sunday and help. I’ve been gathering inspirational images of some of my favorite flowers. I think I want the garden to be pinks, purples, whites, and greens. I started a wish list of flowers that includes Canterbury Bells, Poppies, Phlox, and Bleeding Hearts. I have two gardens that I need to work on. On the side of my house I get full sun after 12. In the back of my house we are planning a pea-gravel driveway trimmed with a shade garden. Think: ferns, bleeding hearts, and hostas. Maybe we will get the step in this weekend? What are your plans for the weekend?

Lovely ideas. Can't wait to see the progress …

Going to the farmer's market this weekend {trying to be better about buying good, local produce}. Seeing Hamlet tomorrow night with my love. Grading students' final papers {yuck}, and hopefully seeing some friends.

I can't wait to see what you do with your garden!! I am busy packing (we move in 2 weeks!), filling out more job applications, working at the greenhouse, and hopefully spending some time with my mom.

I think your house is amazing and I love reading about all of your cool renovation projects!!

That sounds like so much fun! This weekend my fiance and I are taking our mom's to brunch and then a day at the beach!! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

check out the m'head garden club plant sale at star of the sea church tomorrow a.m. I have bought great plants there over the years–they'll have Solomon's Seal which would be great for your shade garden. Love your blog!

Your gardens sound like they'll be great! We're working on ours right now. Sweet peas, sugar snap peas, tomatoes, peppers, beans, carrots, lettuce. Also, for flowers, bleeding hearts (the white ones are beautiful!), foxglove, ferns, a couple hostas, some wildflowers (echinacea, queen anne's lace), marigolds, and some other things. Kind of a random mix of things I like! The marigolds are for planting around my veggies, so the critters don't get them :)

I hope you get your step in, it's going to be soooo cool!

LOVE hostas! Their big, gorgeous leaves make me so happy, and they come in so many shades of green! Also lovely in a shade garden is lilies of the valley. when i did my in-law's garden we discovered some growing wild so i propagated them and now they take over every spring.

Hi Katie,

Just a few comments about your plant choices based on my own experience with my Salem garden: think about poppies–they don't bloom for very long and take up a lot of space. Same for bleeding hearts, which I LOVE, but die back completely in the summer. All Phlox gets mildewy, with the exception of the DAVID variety. Newbury Perennial Gardens has a great nursery and beautiful display gardens as well.

I have the same color scheme in my backyard and some of the same plants. Hellebores and frittillaria would be great for a shade garden. Also plant herbs because a lot of them have purple flowers. Love your blog. I was crushed when Domino sent me the notice. I am so glad I found you
