New Book! Lost Crafts: Rediscovering Traditional Skills

I am so buying this book right now! A new book by Una McGovern promoting traditional crafts and housekeeping. The book offers a look at bygone crafts such as making lace, cheese, making bow & arrows, and stonemasonry. As I return to a simplier way of life I find myself yearning for books that teach me lessons that involve a little pain and sweat. Looks like a great read. How amazing is the cover too? I love this book and bought it only because Rob Ryan did the cover and I worship him. I'm now obsessed with making cheese.

People always laugh at me for doing "old lady" things like embroidery and needlework. I say that these things, which used to be taught and practiced by every genteel young lady are soon going to be forgotten if they aren't taught. I find it very meditative, and I create some awesome things! I will have to pick up this book because I am interested in some of the other things in it… for the same reason as you… returning to a simpler way of life.

Thanks for finding this book, buying it and telling us about it! I have this on my Amazon wishlist and will, someday, buy it! I love reading about this stuff, too. Just to know how to do things makes me feel better if I ever get lost in the woods and have to make a bow and arrow.

Katy, thanks for posting this book. I learned to card wool and spin a few years ago by a dear family friend who is now in her mid-90s! She gave me her spinning wheel, her carders and an entire fleece of wool and spent a weekend showing me how to wash, dry, pick and card the wool and then her technique for spinning. Spinning is one of those "an hour to learn a life time to master" skills. Friends tease me, but I love to spin wool. I wish I had more time to devote to it. It is very relaxing and I feel like I have accomplished something when I see a big beautiful ball of yarn that I made myself!
