Great blog. :) I should have started blogging about my basement renovation when I actually started! If you're keeping the house for 10-20 years, make it your own. If selling/renting is an near future option, go the cheap/plain route. You can find vintage and/or overstock items on ebay, craigslist, freecycle, etc. If you're working with a contractor for the tile floor, call around and ask tile contractors if they have anything in stock. There are many contractors who end up with pricey tiles that a previous customer paid for but didn't like. You can grab these on the cheap and you might even get a deal on the labor if the contractor is extra happy to get rid of the tile. :) Best of luck with the renovation! The tends-to-be-pricey bathroom is definitely one project I'm not looking forward to!

Late to your post, but wanted to comment anyway. Love your inspiration pix and ideas. Some thoughts...

---Since you have a historic house, you might want to go with a cream rather than a bright white (or my favorite: a combination of whites and creams). It will still "read" as white, but will just be a bit softer. And "softer" is a good thing at 6am.

---Going to a tile showroom is like being a kid in a candy store! But you don't have to buy Ann Sacks to get a great look. It's more about the application. Daltile has a line of inexpensive ceramic tiles called Rittenhouse Square. The line has white/cream in gloss or matte finish, in a good selection of sizes and trims. Their "Keystones" line of unglazed porcelain mosaic tiles coordinates with it (hex or other smaller sizes). Simple, classic, and cost effective.

This material would please you, AND makes economic sense if you end up renting the space later.

---Salvage is cost effective, and a vintage item will add character and keep a renovated space from feeling like a showroom. Tub, mirror, light fixture, sink, etc... there is lots of great salvage to be had.

---Since your bathroom looks fairly modest in size, I'd suggest a pedestal sink. Install a recessed medicine cabinet so you have storage right where you need it.

---Think hard about an all-white floor. My hubby is dark, handsome... and hairy. Our old white floor seemed to amplify every errant strand of hair. This made me crazy. If you can relate, you might want to do combination of black/white or similar. (That said, I'm doing a white wood floor in our new bath, and planning to keep a cordless stick vac hidden in a closet right next to the room.)

White is a great classic never dates. I'm sure you have already thought of this, but salvage could be a cost effect, stylish way to go - you get the classic shapes and proportions that you feature in most of these images without breaking the bank. If you want to dress it up tiles up part way with wallpaper above as you show in the last image is v good.

I suppose it comes down to what sort of tenant you want to attract. From a renters point of view, I would pay more for a well designed and decorated house.

A white bathroom never gets old. I love the penny rounds!

And speaking as a renter, i would pay more for a bathroom outside the standard issue vinyl floor and Home Depot sink console.

I think you definitely have the right idea. You can go with a basic white bathroom and dress it up with the linens and accessories. I'm partial to the hexagon floor tiles, clawfoot tubs and pedastal sinks. : )
