Trying to Be Thrifty: Handmade Duvet

I have been searching forever for duvets that I could actually afford. Seriously why does a simple white duvet have to be over a 100 bucks! My mom promised she would bring down a sewing machine she scored for me at a quilting party. I need to stop thinking about buying things and remind myself I can make it. I feel like I get caught up in a buying trap. Making it myself is so much more rewarding! Here are two projects from marthastewart.com above and below. Above is a shot of duvet made with two flat sheets sewn together and below is a no sew embroidered pillows project.

Try Ikea, too. I got a really nice all-white duvet cover there for about $20 last year. Back and border of front are solid white cotton, middle section is pintucked white cotton. Lovely and simple!

Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for a simple brown duvet cover but couldn't bring myself to pay that much for what they were asking for. I'll just make one with some really soft sheets!

I totally agree about getting caught in the "buying trap". I am trying to learn to sew now, so if you know how you should make your own stuff. From what I can tell, you have great taste and I am sure whatever you make will be fantastic.

a duvet is soo easy to sew! you should totally do it. you will be so pleased with the results, and with the money you save. finding the right sheets will take most of the time, and once you do, it's just an afternoon project from there! good luck!

Any recommendations on where to shop for cute/trendy fabric… at an affordable price?
