I love dark hued dining chairs. I like them in jet black or even a dark hunter green. Thonet style dining chairs are my favorite. Thonet is the god of modern bentwood innovation. His chairs popularized in the US in the early 1900′s become synonymous with simple affordable cafe chairs.

The chairs are still available new from a number of retailers (above). But I’ve also come across a number of sets at Brimfield and tag sales. Usually they’re painted a wacky color and have a few broken splits but with a little sanding and a fresh coat of jet black gloss paint the chairs can be transformed to modern works of art.

Argh, I LOVE the bent-wood chairs, and out at Brimfield yesterday I found tons of the simplest style, but my husband hates them for some reason. Finds them uncomfortable. I did get a set of four sturdy old chairs that I'll be rehabbing over the next month or so, but I regret passing up the bent wood ones.
