Maine State Prison Shop

I have to admit I kinda love strange tourist shops. I’ve driven by the Maine State Prison Shop a number of times on our way to a friend’s house in Rockport, Maine. I’ve always wanted to stop but we are usually passing through at 11 o’clock at night or super early in the morning. Our past visit over Labor Day weekend we happen to be visiting during a reasonable hour of the day. Greg put up quite a fit and did not want to stop. Once we did he pouted in the car and then eventually came in. The shop is full of mostly wooden crafts all made by Maine Prisoners. There are even real prisoners working the cash register. Kinda strange how the customers gawk at the prisoners and then buy there cute wooden sailboats. We had fun and it was a nice little detour on the ride up. Check out Maine Prison Shop’s website for purchasing info: maine.gov

I have heard so many good things about this gift shop. When I was in Maine last summer we tried to stop, but it was closed.

I walked right by the shop when I was in Rockport in August. I couldn't bring myself to go in. The whole idea of prison just makes me too sad.

I actually found your site when I did a Google Images search for the Maine State Prison Store. I've been going to the store since I was little and this summer my husband and I are taking our boys there (they've never been). I was showing my son pictures of some of the things we're going to see. We just love that all of the things in this store are handmade by guys who despite being in prison are doing productive things and they are so talented!!
Anyway, thanks for the pictures! =)
